Congratulations! The Sacramento City Council will reconsider its decision to move general public testimony to the very end of its meetings.
They listened to our concern that this move made it very difficult for some citizens to participate, especially those dependent upon public transportation. They heard us emphasize that the opportunity for ordinary citizens to address the Council directly about their concerns was to be valued and facilitated not discouraged. The Mayor, Councilmembers Steve Cohn, Bonnie Pannell and Sandy Sheedy asked that at a future meeting the Council take another look at how best to include Public Testimony at the start of the agenda, perhaps by utilizing a time limit, with additional time then available at the end of the agenda.
Thank you to all who sent letters or emails to the City Council including many individual citizens, the American Civil Liberties Union, SafeGround Sacramento and the League of Women Voters.
Two dozen people came in person to the City Council meeting and a number spoke out in opposition to the change. Below is a video with television coverage from Fox 40.
Again, thank you for your help. Our combined voices have been heard.
