September 2013 Newsletter

Dear friend of Loaves & Fishes,

Dan was hungry, homeless, and friendless. He was tired of scrounging through dumpsters and surviving off of just scraps. His everyday was consumed with the single goal of finding enough food. He didn’t have the time or energy for anything else. If you don’t eat it’s hard to sleep at night, and even harder to get going in the morning.

“When I first got to Loaves & Fishes I thought I was in heaven.” Dan quickly realized that he didn’t have to survive off the crumbs left over by society but that he could get a home cooked, filling, and nutritious meal at Loaves & Fishes. “It was a big load off my shoulders.”

By providing Dan with the food he needs everyday it allows him to turn his attention to other essential things like finding a job, looking for somewhere to live, and maybe even going back to school. Until the basic needs of living, like food and water, are met it’s extremely hard to improve upon other areas of your life.

Because of people like Dan, we think about food all the time. In fact, our Head Chef, Edwin, prepares 600-800 meals everyday, so we have to think about it a lot. Any good chef will tell you that a good meal has to start with good ingredients, but getting good ingredients isn’t always easy, especially for a non-profit that needs four tons of produce a month and often must work with a diverse array of food donations. Chef Edwin is great at making delicious meals out of seemingly contrary ingredients.

We believe that everyone deserves access to basic healthy food, that’s why we always try to make the most nutritious meals we can, so that our homeless guests have the best chance of being healthy. Being in the Sacramento Valley with such a wealth of agriculture has been a tremendous blessing. It’s enabled us to always have great partnerships with local food producers like Davis/Sloughhouse Ranch & Helping Hands Produce, Senior Gleaners, General Produce and many other local farms and producers. Be sure to watch the video above to see some of the ways we’re working with these and other organizations.

Our goal is to bring as much fresh food as possible from local farmers straight to the forks of our homeless guests. Through partnerships with local farms, distributors, and local gardeners we’re able to serve fresh food, stretch your donation dollars, and ensure that everyone has a healthy meal and a healthy life.

Even if you don’t have a farm or ranch your help is essential. By partnering with local growers and distributors we’re able to stretch your donation dollars so we can provide the most people with the freshest and healthiest food possible. Please click here to donate today.

Peace & Love,
Loaves & Fishes
