December 2017 Newsletter

One of our guests taking a moment of respite in the Dining Room.

Dear Friend,

Imagine waking up Christmas morning in an alleyway still shivering from the cold night – no special breakfast, no family traditions, no hope. Unfortunately, it’s a sad reality for our homeless guests.

You and I know that the holidays are for families coming together to celebrate. For some, it is Christmas, for others, it is Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, or another holiday event. There are common threads in each of these religions and traditions that often focus on family, gift-giving, and a spirit of goodwill toward fellow men & women. It should be an inspiring time of year.

Sadly, for many, the holidays are a truly difficult time of year. For our guests at Loaves & Fishes, the holidays remind them that they are alone, and without shelter in the cold of the elements, leaving them with so little to celebrate.

There has been an overwhelming increase in the number of men, women, and children of Sacramento who have found themselves homeless, with the number of those living on the streets nearly doubling in the last 2 years according to the latest official count.

In the spirit of the holidays, your goodwill and support is needed so that we can provide guests with a warm shower, a hot meal, and other survival services. With so many more people in need, your donations are needed now, more than ever.

As the weather turns colder, people come to us, shivering each morning, trying to find warmth, some food, and comfort. Your donation will help people like John, who suffers from paranoia with his mental illness, and struggles to trust anyone to help him. You can help people like Jennifer, who is disabled and has been on the streets for longer than she can keep track. Your donation will help Robert and his family, who suffered a job loss, was evicted, and now struggles to find a way to keep his kids off of the streets.

When you make your donation to Loaves & Fishes in the spirit of Christmas (and other holidays), you help make sure that the men, women, and children experiencing homelessness receive the gift of tomorrow, and the hope that it will be a brighter day.

Please make a donation, so that you can ensure that everyone gets the food, warmth, support, survival services, and respect that they need during the holidays.

Thank you for your support. Thank you for a being part of this community. Thank you for making a difference.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you!

Gratefully and sincerely,

Noel Kammermann
Executive Director
