Resident gardener Donna mourns with our community at our annual Dia de los Muertos service.

Dear Friend,

It is often difficult to keep track of the wonderful things that happen at Loaves & Fishes, even on a normal day. The hard working, dedicated staff and volunteers welcome our guests with warmth and dignity each and every day, ready to meet each of their needs as they come. There is also the amazing support that we receive from the community that allows us to provide survival services to the most vulnerable members of our community. Our co-founder, Chris Delany, regularly describes this place as a miracle.

Still, there are some days that are tough, and other days that are tragic. A guest named Michelle passed away just steps from our campus not long ago. Several Loaves & Fishes program staff and volunteers knew her well, including Friendship Park, Maryhouse, Mercy Clinic, and others. Michelle’s fellow guests knew her, too. She was a part of our community, and we are all feeling the loss.

I am troubled to my core when our guests pass away. Each time it happens - and sometimes it happens more than we can bear - I have to pause and reflect. We hold a memorial service whenever one of our community passes away, so we can reflect and grieve together, and their name is etched into our Memorial Wall in Friendship Park. It is an important reminder to those guests that we continue to serve with dignity and respect.

Legal Clinic director Tamara eulogizes a dearly departed guest to staff, volunteers, and guests.

I also reflect on the roughly one thousand men, women, and children that we help each and every day, some of whom are able to move on and find housing in the community. Those lucky success stories fill me with hope for each new guest who finds us. It is an amazing sight to see when a former guest comes back and shows a set of keys to a house or apartment jingling in their fingertips, the metal flash not nearly as bright as their smiles. I can’t help but smile as I think about it.

In order for Loaves & Fishes to continue providing survival services to our guests, we need your help. Please consider making a donation to Loaves & Fishes, and help provide survival services to the men, women, and children of Sacramento who are without a home.

Thank you again for your continued support, and for making such a profound difference in our community.

Gratefully and sincerely,

Noel Kammermann
Executive Director
