Once again, the Holiday Season is upon us. Here at Loaves & Fishes we are beset by plans to make the holidays joyful and as ‘homey’ as possible for our sisters and brothers who no longer enjoy the amenities of home life.
Once again we rely upon you to supply the wherewithal to make this happen. We have faith that you will not let us down, just as your consistent and generous support throughout these thirty-two years have made it possible for us to continue to feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, visit the sick and prisoners (Matt. 25). As you learned recently in all these years we have ministered to ‘the least’ through 7,000,000 meals, only because of your generosity.
Last month the Co-founder of Loaves & Fishes, Dan Delany, passed away after a long bout with dementia. In the very early days of Loaves & Fishes the property that is now our Dining Room was put up for sale at a cost of $250,000.00. Dan proposed to the Board of Directors that we should purchase it. When it was discovered that the sum total of funds on hand was $6,000.00, everyone thought it would be a hopeless endeavor.
Not Dan! A man of deep Faith, he sat down and composed one of his super begging letters giving reasons why we needed this property for the growing numbers of homeless, hungry folk. Miracle of miracles we raised the money! Why? How? Because good, generous, compassionate people (you) were moved to give what you could.
After that Dan coined the phrase, ‘the Bank of Faith,’ meaning that if our fund raising efforts are caring for God’s People, God will make it happen! We’ve not been turned down yet.
This Christmas Season when we decorate trees, exchange gifts, plan gourmet dinners, attend parties and religious services, let us remember that we are celebrating the birth of Jesus, and the establishment of His Kingdom on earth. We join with Mary and Joseph, angels, shepherds and kings in worshipping this newborn King who would not only be one with the poor but also, their champion. Let us remember that we bring life and strength to the Kingdom whenever and however we participate in the Works of Mercy.
We thank you for your generous support in the past and beg for your continued deposits in the ‘Bank of Faith’ in the future.
